Why preventive care gets skipped — and what it costs

When someone skips a routine check-up, the reason is usually practical, not philosophical. The visit costs money they don't have this month, or means losing a shift they can't afford to lose. So the appointment stays pending — indefinitely.

The trouble with pending care is that it rarely stays the same size. A manageable concern becomes a crisis. A small bill becomes a large one, often borne by an emergency department that can't turn anyone away.

Forward-funding basic appointments — a check-up, a screening, a therapy session — is one of the cheapest forms of healthcare there is. It is cheaper than the alternative, and kinder than waiting for the crisis.
